Selecting the right auto insurance for you is a very important decision.  Even the safest drivers may find themselves in the need of an insurance policy.  You can control how you drive but not how others do.  Even if you are very safe, you may cross paths with someone that has had too much to drink or simply does not know how to drive.

Find out if the policy covers a rental car if needed.  If your car is involved in an accident that requires it to be in the repair shop for an extended amount of time then you will need a form of transportation in the mean time.  If the policy covers a rental car then you can take advantage of it and not have to stress over how to get to work or around town.

Having GAP insurance on your vehicle is also a plus if you owe money towards the purchase of the vehicle.  The GAP policy will cover any difference between what the current value at the time of the accident was and what you owe on it.  If your car is totaled out by the insurance company but after they pay their portion for it you still owe thousands of dollars to the lender, you could find yourself paying a payment on a car that you do not own anymore.

Some of the insurance companies are offering an accident forgiveness policy.  That means that if you are a safe driver and you get into an accident they will not raise your premiums.  If you have a sketchy driving record or find that you are involved in accidents fairly frequently, this policy may not be available to you.

The most important thing to do before selecting an insurance policy would be to get some estimates.  You can do this online at many of the agency websites and for free.  Check out what prices different agencies can give you.  You may find an agency that will give you great coverage as well as a lower price.  Spending a few hours online checking the differences between providers can lead to very good service at a very reasonable price.
